Frequently asked questions
What is the LTCG tax rate on equity shares and mutual funds?
12.5% on long-term gains (holding over 12 months) above an annual exemption of ₹1.25 lakh, for sales on or after 23 July 2024. Short-term gains (12 months or less) are taxed at 20%.
Is indexation still available on property sales?
Only for properties bought before 23 July 2024 — you can choose whichever is lower, 20% tax with indexation or 12.5% without. For purchases on or after that date, only the flat 12.5% (no indexation) applies.
How are debt mutual funds taxed?
Debt funds bought on or after 1 April 2023 get no long-term benefit at all — gains are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, regardless of how long you held them.
Can I avoid capital gains tax on selling property?
Yes, within limits — Section 54/54F lets you reinvest the gain into a residential house, and Section 54EC lets you invest up to ₹50 lakh of the gain in NHAI/REC bonds within 6 months (5-year lock-in) to claim a full exemption.
